During the Second World War, resources were scarce and Governments ran massive recycling campaigns to make sure that as little as possible was wasted. Waste was segregated for the following uses:

- Metal and tine were recycled for use in aircraft, tanks and weapons.

- Left over food provided feed for pigs, chickens and goats.

- Rubber was collected to make tires.

- Boiled bones were used to make glue for aircraft, ground up to make fertilizer or made into glycerin for explosives.

Households were also encouraged to repair belongings, such as clothes, as opposed to just buying new ones. Campaigns like ‘Make Do & Mend’ advised people on how to recycle textiles and patch up their worn out clothes. Knitting also soared in popularity during the Second World War.

Families had to plan meals carefully to ensure that food did not go to waste. With no fridges or freezers, perishable food had to be bought in small quantities and meals were made with some interesting substitutes. Meat fat was commonly saved to make pastry, and the cream from milk was collected in a jar and shaken to make butter.

It is sad that it took people so long to acknowledge the importance of recycling, and also that it took such unfortunate circumstances to draw it to our attention. Nowadays, we realize the importance of recycling to preserve the Earth’s resources and to reduce pollution.

Even so, we are still failing to recycle a lot of items that are recyclable. The reasons for recycling may be different now from what they were during the War, but we can still take inspiration from our grandparents.

—

Ware 4 Recycling Bins Ltd have been promoting cost effective recycling bins, trolleys and waste containers for over 5 years.

Although puff back actually sounds quite harmless it could cause a lot of damage in your home. Puff back occurs when soot shoots out of your boiler due to a misfire. Depending on how much soot is expelled from your boiler, you could end up with a lot of damage. You could end up having to replace a lot of furniture which could cost a lot of money especially if your furniture is quite expensive. This soot can spread through the rest of the house given time.

What Is Puff Back Cause From?

The reason why a puff back occurs is that the ignition in your boiler has failed to work as it should. It has not ignited straight away and this has allowed a build up of oil vapours. When the boiler does ignite it causes a mini explosion and this can send soot out of the boilers exhaust. These explosions are generally not life threatening and are quite similar to how a car exhaust back fires. But aside from them not being dangerous, these explosions can actually cause quite a bit of damage depending on how big they are and the location of your boiler. These mini- explosions may go unnoticed if you are not looking out for them; each explosion may only produce a small amount of soot.

But if they continue to happen it could mean a lot of damage. Often a lot of damage builds up before the owner actually begins to notice a problem.

How To Avoid Puff Back

One of the most common causes of puff back is a faulty ignition switch in your boiler. That is why it is advisable for you to make sure you call for professional help the minute you notice any soot. But if you get your boiler serviced regularly you should be able to avoid this event altogether.

Heating ones home in the cold months of winter can cost a fair packet. Fuel such as electricity and gas show no signs of coming down in price. Many individuals are now changing over to cheaper home heating oil though. When they do they always need their tanks filled with heating oil to ensure they never run out.

Possibly it won’t be today, but a time will come when you look around your place and think that something happened that your weren’t aware of. Rubbish piled up. it is possible that it could have happended over a period of time, and could have been the result of something you had been working on. Doesn’t matter how it happened, it needs to be removed from your property as soon as possible.

When a property is vacated by a tenant or where a property has been vacant for many months it is not uncommon for a build up of waste to occur. It sometimes includes the removal of dangerous or hazadous materials such as asbestos.

What is it that can be done? When there is little other choice, most people prefer to hire a skip. Basically a skip will come to your location and you will be able to load everything from your place into the skip. There are some problems associated with this which you may not have thought about when deciding to hire the skip.

Where is all of your rubbish going to end up? Chances are the skip will take it to a landfill where it will sit for an unknown number of years. if you care about the environment, then you will have to consider another option. What can you do? How can you get around doing all the work yourself, whilst filling up a landfill with hazadous materials?

Why not hire a site clearance company? You can find companies that will specialise in the removal of this rubbish from your property. Not only that, there won’t be any need to sort through the rubbish. Think of them as an advanced house cleaning service. A representative from a site clearance company will come to your house in uniform, sort your rubbish and remove it on their lorry for recycling. You needn’t worry any more about your rubbish landing in the local landfill site.

SecuresiteUK offers a comprehensive service including: vacant property security and concrete barriers, to protect your business, open ground or personal property.

Pollution is a forever growing problem and we have to take guard and find a solution. One of the main reasons as to why we are polluting the environment is because there is so much paper being wasted every week.

But offices haven’t still fully updated to modern standards, I have been into offices that literally still use filing cabinets, fax machines and paper print outs. So below are various tips you can take into consideration when making your office greener.

1) Get rid of the old dusty fax machine and sign up to a fax to email service online, this way you will be able to receive and send all of your faxes digitally and eliminate the use of paper.

2) Get rid of that filing cabinet and store all of your documents into a computer database that can be remotely accessed, remember to take daily backups.

3) Keep your office up to date with the latest trends.

If you are working in the office then now is exactly the right time to participate and help it go green. There is no need to waste paper and precious materials instead help ease global warming by having an eco friendly office.

There are plenty more benefits that can come from this, it will help make your office a lot more efficient. You will actually save money in the long run believe it or not and that extra money can go towards improving efficiency further. It’s a mindset that all businesses should get into really.

As more people become environmentally conscious it is good to hear that used cars now have stickers which make it easy to determine their fuel economy. This new scheme was launched last November and it involves using colour coded labels with green being the most fuel efficient and red being the least. This scheme has been welcomed by the many different environmentally friendly groups as it makes the decision on which car to buy much easier for the used car buyer.

And people are not only choosing these fuel efficient cars in order to do their bit for the environment. It is also important for people wanting to save a bit of money on fuel costs. People will be able to see which cars consume a large amount of petrol as they will have a red label on them. Even though the use of this scheme is only voluntary at the moment, it is expected that the majority of used car dealers will be introducing it soon. The project is being led by a collection of different interest groups including the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership.

These new labels are very easy to read and as well as having a colour they will come with additional information. It will have the model and make of the car and data about carbon dioxide emissions. You can also find out how much it will cost in fuel for 12,000 miles. As 2001 was the year that all cars had to be tested for CO2 emissions, the scheme applies to all cars from 2001 onwards.

How fuel efficient a car is, is a factor that many people put high on their priorities when they are buying a new car. This scheme will make it easier for us to decide which used car to buy. It is hoped that all used cars will be part of this scheme in the future making it much easier for the used car buyer to make a decision.

When you think it’s time to look out for used cars for sale, you are always better off trying to research your vehicles beforehand. Researching allows you to find the very best used cars for the category you are looking for. Once you’ve finished, you could find youself driving away from the dealers in a used VW polo or even a used aston martin.

Manycar insurance policies are still sold for one year. However to meet the flexible driving needs of today’s drivers, short termvehicleinsurance is available for much shorter periods.

Short termmotorinsurance is usually referred to as policies ranging from 1 to 28 days. However, now flexiblecovercan be secured for between 1 to 6 months.

There are even now policies coined “pay as you go”. This gives the option to switchcoveron and off for times when they know it will not be required.

There arenumerous situations where1 day temporary cover may be required. One of the most common is making sure you are protected when borrowing a friends vehicle. Securing an extra policy for this could protect a no claims bonus built up if no claim has been made for a while. This could therefore be a cost effective option for more experienced drivers.

Another reason short termmotorinsurance is taken out is to providecoverfor an additional driver so driving can be shared on a longer trip or vacatio.

Protecting a visitor from abroad is another reason why taking out short term insurance may be necessary. As is being covered for 24 hours when needing to drive a new vehicle home from a dealership. Taking a test drive and needinginsurancefor a day can be another eventuality.

Manypeople who drive a van, don’t actually own one themselves. This can be where2 week car insurance is required, when you are using a van for a range of reasons.

For those riders that are planning a summer road trip or perhaps attending a biking convention or meet-up,temp insurance could be useful if thebikeyou are riding is not one you use regularly. This could be beneficial if they will only be riding thebikewhile they are away.

If you have ever thought about changing your heating oil boiler then now is the time to do it as the government are now paying £400 to those who agree to do it. If you have a G rated oil boiler which is over 25 years of age then you will be eligible to apply. There are 120,000 vouchers available and only 50,000 of them have been claimed so far. So if you have been thinking that you would love to get rid of your old boiler then you will have an extra incentive now.

The government are not doing this to be generous but they actually want more of these energy efficient boilers introduced into homes as they are better for the environment. Not only does having a new boiler mean that you can get one of these vouchers, but it also means that you are likely to save £200 a year by having these new energy-efficient boilers. It is hoped that more and more people will be encouraged to get rid of their old boilers with all these incentives on offer. New boilers are also better for the environment because they produce less CO2 emissions.

But the scheme is only open to residents in England at the moment. The reason for this is that the devolved governments in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland will need to decide if they wish to implement such as scheme.

If you are a resident of England you will need to find out the specifications of your boiler to find out if it meets the criteria. This means checking to see if it is G rated and whether or not it is over twenty five years old. Check whether or not your boiler has a permanent pilot light as this is an almost certain indicator that it is G rated. Plus almost all boilers which are over 25 years of age will be G rated.

Heating ones home in the cold months of winter can cost a fair packet. Electricity and gas prices are very high and show no signs of coming down any time soon. Savvy people are changing over to oil as a home fuel though. When they do they always need their tanks filled with cheapest heating oil to make sure they don’t run dry in the cold weather.

A major concern of heating oil is the risk of having a spillage and many are concerned about how they would handle this. This can easily happen when filling the tank or if you have a leak somewhere. As well as being a hassle to clean it should also be noted that this could be potentially very dangerous. For this reason it is important that you know how to deal with a heating oil spillage. An oil spillage should be dealt with immediately and not put off until a later time.

If you have a large heating oil spillage then you will need to call in the professionals to deal with the situation, but you should be able to manage small spills yourself. If you do notice an oil spillage then it is extremely important to make sure that there are no sparks or flames in the vicinity of the spill.

You can get rid of a lot of the spilled heating oil by covering it with saw dust or cat litter and then scooping this up with a shovel. What you will be left with after this will be much easier to manage. You can clean up the remaining oil spill with hot water and soap but it will need to be scrubbed. When you are finished you will need to dispose of anything that you used during the clean up and get rid of those things that the oil came in contact with. Make sure that you dispose of everything safely into strong plastic bags. Then you can go over the area again to make sure there is no oil left.

Always make sure to deal with a spillage of oil as soon as you notice it. Remember to get professional help if there is a lot of oil or you are unsure about what you are doing.

Some people spend a lot of money heating their homes in the winter. Gas and electricity are very expensive today, with no signs of prices coming down. Savvy people are changing over to oil as a home fuel though. When they do they always need their tanks filled with cheapest heating oil to make sure they don’t run dry in the cold weather.

Below are some of the environmental and money saving benefits of recycling paper…

Saves Trees – The most obvious reason to recycle paper is for saving trees which provide vital oxygen for the planet. Just 1 ton of recycled paper saves at least 16 of them.

Wildlife Preservation – More often than not, the wildlife that lives in the trees that are cut down to make ‘new’ paper, die quickly because they cannot adapt to living anywhere else. Recycling paper means that they can die natural deaths instead of forced ones.

Cheaper Paper – Recycled paper is often cheap to purchase. Buying cheaper, recycled goods encourages more recycled goods to be manufactured, sustaining the recycling industry.

Less Water Consumption – To make ‘new’ paper requires vast amounts of water, whereas the process of recycling paper uses up much less of this important resource.

Saves Electricity – Over 400 kilowatt hours of energy are saved by recycling paper instead of making a fresh 1 ton batch, and that could be used in heating and lighting homes instead.

Reduces Oil Dependence – Oil production has some horrific effects on the environment and any chance to reduce oil consumption should be taken. Saving 2 barrels per ton of recycled paper really makes a difference in the long term.

Less Pollution – Paper can burn in municipal waste incinerators that can spew out all kinds of air pollutants. When many incinerators are in urban locations, everyone would benefit from breathing better air if there were fewer of them.

Creates Jobs – Think about all the people who work within the paper recycling industry. Collectors, sorters and machine operators being just a few of them. The more that we recycle, the more of these jobs there will be created.

Paper Logs – Many people are now turning to paper logs as a supplementary fuel source. Consisting of tightly compressed briquettes of paper, these logs can be thrown on a fire or used in a wood burner to provide heat for free.
